Perry was born in Chicago to actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. She made her first appearances in the television screen as Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on the ABC comedy Roseanne. The actress did not go on to pursue acting as a career until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being concerned about the adverse consequences stress can cause. Perry stated that she was nervous to be an actor in high school but began acting at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, getting small role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry go back to California to work as a theater actress. In 2013, she was a part of The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on ABC's show The Family. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. That same year she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) in which she played her mother in a younger version. She got the part through an open audition despite being connected to this persona.
